Iran, FAO to expand hybrid rice farming

FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) of UN is to cooperate with Iran?s Rice Research Institute on hybrid rice farming, secretary of Iran?s Rice Society Jamil Alizadeh Shayegh said on Sunday.
The joint project is going to be in line with the nation?s policy on reaching self-sufficiency in rice production, he stated, adding that the plan would increase productivity twice as much per hectare.
?At present, two representatives of FAO are visiting rice-bearing regions of the country and it is anticipated that the plan would come to life next year after studying FAO?s proposal followed by legal procedures,? he observed.
Small amount of hybrid rice, also known as transgenic rice, is under cultivation in Iran and it is yet to be commercialized nationwide.
